"Adipose tissue biology and effect of weight loss in women with lipedema"

Dr. Thomas Wright and Dr. Vincenza Cifarelli discuss the key findings of a newly published scientific paper that documents body composition of women lipedema and the changes that occur to them with weight loss.  The paper also shows new insights into the metabolic health of women with lipedema compared to BMI matched controls and shows how it is improved with weight loss.  Finally, the paper gives new insight and understanding to the adipose tissue biology in women with lipedema.   The thigh tissue of women with lipedema has unregulated genes that control inflammation and fibrosis compared to controls.

Thomas Wright, MD, FACP, FAVLS, RVT
Dr. Thomas Wright is a board-certified physician who has specialized in venous and lymphatic medicine for over 20 years. Dr. Wright brings a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to treating causes of edema and his research and practice focuses on lipedema and related fat disorders and venous insufficiency. 
 
Vincenza Cifarelli, PhD
Dr. Vincenza Cifarelli is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at Saint Louis University. Dr. Cifarelli's research program addresses the role of vascular and lymphatic endothelium in metabolic health, tissue remodeling and inflammation. She studies mechanisms of adipose tissue remodeling in women with obesity and Lipedema.
