"Beyond the Diagnosis: Laser Therapy for Comprehensive Breast Cancer Lymphedema Care"
An estimated 20,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer related lymphedema each year. BCRL is a secondary lymphedema that occurs when lymphatic vessels are damaged during radiation and surgical removal as part of many standard breast cancer treatment protocols. Approximately 70% of cases develop during the first year, although it can develop immediately during the early treatment phase or decades later. These lifesaving treatments are, by nature, invasive not only to the vast network of lymphatic vessels that affect fluid drainage away from the tissues, but also blood vessels, nerve endings, muscle, tendon, and other connective tissues including skin. These tissues undergo changes that result in swelling, scar tissue, sensory changes, and discomfort. In this webinar, Dr. Heather Evans will discuss how the Lymphedema Therapist can use laser therapy in the clinic setting to improve function in patients with not only lymphedema, but the ancillary tissue changes that occur through the continuum of breast cancer treatment, from the initial acute stages of surgery and radiation to the late stage chronic stages in the years after. Presented by Heather Evans, DC, LMT, CLT-LANA.
Dr Evans has been a Certified Lymphedema Therapist for 28 years. She owns a cash based private practice in Dallas, Texas. She works with lymphedema patients discharging from insurance-based outpatient therapy to assist them with targeted care to address chronic fibrosis and related surgical scarring, as well as acute orthopedic and plastic surgery recovery. She uses a variety of tools including Hyparbaric oxygen, Extra corporeal shockwave therapy, Low Level cold laser, Myofascial release, and Manual lymph Drainage.
