"Breast and Chest Wall Swelling-Ensuring the Proper Compression"

Speakers:
Joann Brooks was the Lymphology Medical Education Advisor for Essity, Inc. in New England representing Jobst, FarrowWrap and JoVi compression garments and related products from 2018 to August, 2024. She is currently a consultant to Essity. She graduated from Northwestern University Medical School Programs in Physical Therapy in 1978, went on to get a Masters in Public Health from Boston University in 1989 and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute in 2002. She is an APTB certified orthopedic clinical specialist since 2001 and a Norton certified lymphedema therapist since 2009. In addition to maintaining a clinical practice in orthopedics and then later in cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema therapy, she was an assistant clinical professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions for over 20 years. She has over 35 years of management experience in acute care inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and oncology. She has presented to many audiences on various topics in lymphedema including breast cancer related lymphedema and fibrosis, management of swelling and prevention of lymphedema after TJR, measurement and garment selection in select lymphedema  populations,  adhesive Velcro wrap compression considerations, infection and inflammation in lymphedema, and complete solutions to prevention and management of lymphedema. Joann’s passion is for quality survivorship of breast cancer patients.

Dr. Bell has devoted much time to studying and solving the complicated problems for this patient population and lectures extensively in the US and internationally regarding physical therapy interventions for PT’s and other medical disciplines. She has a specific interest in treating the Oncology and breast cancer population and understands the challenges following the medical procedures that impair the lymphatic system and create scarring and other functional limitations. She has been very involved with the American Physical Therapy Association both in Vermont and Nationally since 1988, including serving as the Lymphedema Special Interest Group Chair for the Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy from 2004 to 2021. In 2001 she co-developed the Bellisse Compressure Comfort Bra to meet the needs of breast cancer patients with trunk and breast edema. Dr. Bell is always very excited to have the opportunity to share her observations and innovative treatment techniques with her colleagues.
