Pregnancy and postpartum bring major hormonal and fluid shifts that place added stress on the lymphatic and venous systems. This webinar highlights how Certified Lymphedema Therapists can safely support women during this period through evidence‑informed assessment, early identification of pathological swelling, and appropriate modifications to MLD, compression, and exercise. We’ll also explore how to recognize patterns suggestive of lipedema, understand risks for progression to lipo‑lymphedema, and integrate broader PT/OT skills to address musculoskeletal and functional challenges. Clinicians will leave with practical strategies to enhance maternal outcomes and protect long‑term lymphatic and vascular health. At the end of the session, participants will be able to: - Describe the physiological changes during pregnancy and postpartum that impact the lymphatic and venous systems, including their role in the development of edema and chronic venous insufficiency.
- Differentiate between normal perinatal swelling and pathological presentations, including early signs of lymphatic dysfunction and clinical patterns suggestive of lipedema and progression to lipo-lymphedema.
- Apply safe and appropriate lymphedema management strategies during pregnancy and postpartum, including modifications to manual lymphatic drainage, compression, and exercise interventions.
- Integrate preventative and early intervention strategies to reduce the risk of chronic lymphedema, chronic venous insufficiency, and other long-term sequelae in the perinatal population.
- Incorporate principles from physical and occupational therapy practice to address musculoskeletal, functional, and mobility impairments, supporting a more comprehensive and patient-centered approach to care during the perinatal period.
