Executive Director - National Lymphedema Network (NLN)

The National Lymphedema Network (NLN) is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to advancing lymphedema awareness, education, and advocacy in the United States. This vibrant organization has experienced significant growth in the past decade and is seeking to continue to grow and modernize its functions in order to reach wider audiences as well as provide greater depth of information to its members and to the public. The organization is seeking a highly organized, Executive Director to facilitate continued growth and development of the NLN. Experience in the field of lymphedema is preferred. Understanding of health care non-profit organizational structure and function is preferred.The Executive Director is the key management leader of the National Lymphedema Network. The ED is responsible for implementing and executing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, public relations, and community outreach and awareness efforts. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Location: Home based, no NLN office.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Board Collaboration and Governance – Works with the NLN’s Board of Directors in order to fulfill the organization’s mission.
    1. Responsible for leading the NLN in a manner that supports and guides the organization in accordance with its mission.
    2. Responsible for communicating effectively with the board and providing timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  2. Financial Performance and Viability – Develops and grows resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization. Acts as a responsible steward of the organizations resources.
    1. Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the NLN including budget proposal and financial reports to the Board of Directors.
    2. Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
    3. Responsible for fundraising and developing revenue generating resources, such as membership drives and other special projects, necessary to support the NLN’s mission.
  3. Organization Mission and Strategy- Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
    1. Responsible for implementation of core programs that carry out the organization’s mission including but not limited to:
      1. The annual NLN conference
      2. The Marilyn Westbrook Garment fund
      3. Lymphlink Newsletter
      4. Lymph Science and Advocacy Program (LSAP)
      5. Lymph e-channel
      6. NLN resource guide
      7. Patient education materials
      8. Position statements and white papers reflecting current medical practice
  4. Organization Operations – Oversees and implements appropriate resources, to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriately carried out.
    1. Responsible for effective administration of NLN’s day-to-day operations.
    2. Responsible for the hiring and/or outsourcing of competent, qualified staff or services.
    3. Responsible for signing all notes, agreements and other instruments made and entered into on behalf of the organization with consultation of the Board of Directors.

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership preferably in the health care sector.
  • Five or more years leadership experience.
  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including: budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Ability to convey a vision of the NLN’s strategic future to public stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit and health care sectors with demonstrable successes.
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interface and engage with diverse groups including: medical professionals, medical and clinical researchers, patients, policy makers, industry vendors, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff, past success with board collaborations preferred.
  • Strong public speaking ability.

Actual Job Responsibilities:

  • Planning and operations for annual professional conference
  • Planning of annual budget
  • Oversight of the development and deployment of all print, video, audio and other materials for education and awareness including but not limited to: Lymphlink newsletter, position papers, website content, and other materials in collaboration with content matter experts.
  • Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operations of the NLN.
  • Serve as the NLN’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the United States and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the NLN’s mission.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, programmatic functions, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Supervise and collaborate with organization staff or service vendors.
  • Create a working organizational structure that is comprised of committees of relevance to the mission and work of the NLN.
  • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts including: social media, website, and print materials.
  • Review and approve contracts for services with consultation and input from the Board.

Other duties as assigned by the board.
Compensation package is commensurate with experience and other qualifications.

Lymphedema Occupational Therapist II

As a Lymphedema Occupational Therapist, you will work closely with the Cancer Center at the Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion to evaluate newly diagnosed patients, prior to any intervention, and then follow them during their post treatment.  You will treat patients undergoing therapy – teaching them the skills necessary to manage their conditions independently and help them get back to the activities they enjoy with the greatest degree of health possible.  As a highly respected Lymphedema Therapist you will join a well-established program and with a patient population that includes upper extremity, lower extremity, head and neck lymphedema.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved professional school or graduate of an accredited college or university with a certificate in Occupational Therapy
  • Current California State Occupational Therapist Licensure
  • Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers
  • Two or more years of recent experience in all aspects of Occupational Therapy

 Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • One year experience and training in the evaluation and management of lymphedema
  • Certification in Lymphedema
